It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Johnny Keohane, Burren early on Wednesday morning. Johnny (the postman), was a well-respected member of Kilbrittain GAA. As a player, Junior hurling from 1958 to 1973 (at least, he stayed playing until his early 40's). He was a fine hurler playing mostly at midfield. Kilbrittain regraded to Junior B hurling in 1967 and reached the final where they beat Timoleague in a one-sided final. The report from that game reads “Except for a few flare ups, the game was played in good sporting fashion, but the attention paid to Frank O’Brien and Johnny Keohane was something beyond pardon. Indeed the GAA can feel indebted to these two players that their patience and endurance held out against such provocation.” He was involved at under-age from 1970 as a mentor with the U14 footballers for a number of years. Off the field he represented the club at West Cork level as a delegate to the board in 1966, 72, 73, 79, 80, 82, 86 to 91. He was assistant secretary of the club in 1988 and 1989 and vice chairman of the club in 1990, 92 and 1993. He was involved with many teams at all age groups over many years as a selector with his proudest moment as a selector with Pa Finn, Jimmy Ryan and Maurice McCarthy with the junior A hurling team that won the county in 1985. He stayed involved up to the early 2000's as selector with various Intermediate hurling and junior hurling teams. He was a great supporter of the club and a long-time member in the county board draw. There will be a respectful guard of honour following the removal at 7pm on Thursday, and people are asked to gather at Kilbrittain church from 7:15. Also there will be a guard of honour following requiem mass at 12:00 on Friday. Ar Dheis de go raibh a Anam The death has occurred of Johnny Keohane Burren Kilbrittain.
