Victory Dinner Dance2017
On Saturday night 4th March, Kilbrittain Gaa club celebrated their successful 2016 in a packed Fernhill house hotel.
2016 saw the junior B footballers win the West cork beating Bantry in the final and then blazing a trail through the inter-divisional county series to beat Cobh in the final. This was the third time in the clubs history to annex this competition, the first in 1992 and also in 2009. On the hurling front, the minor A hurlers blazed their own trail through West Cork winning the championship, beating Ahane Gaels in the final, the league, beating Ibane Gaels in the final, and the inaugural Sean Holland tournament cup between Kilbrittain and Courcey Rovers.
On Saturday night they celebrated in style with medals presented to both teams by ex Cork Senior Football goalkeeper, Alan Quirke. Chairman Denis Ryan welcoming all, congratulated both teams and their mentors on a fantastic year. He said as football was not the number one in the club, it was a great achievement to win a county. He said the stand out moment for him was when Owen Sexton travelled from Westport Co. Mayo to make the west cork final against Bantry in Drimoleague. He said it showed what it meant to Owen to play for the local club. He was loud in his praise for club secretary Marion Twohig who he described as “the engine of the club”, and also praised treasurer Sharon McSweeney for her unenviable job of handling the clubs finances at a time when fundraising is ongoing. He thanked the main club sponsors The Amber Bar and H&H Construction for their support and also the Golf Classic committee and sponsor Sean O’Connor. He was loud in praise of the Lotto committee for the weekly running of the lotto that currently stands at €10,400 and also thanked Niall and Celina Crowley in the Post Office for making the club gear available to the public. Mentioning the new development, he expressed the gratitude of the club to the development committee spearheaded by Tomas Brennan, and also to the boxers who “were brave to step into the ring” for the Clash without the Ash back in December. The assembled crowd were told that the next main fundraiser will take place at Curaheen park in early November with more details to follow in the next few weeks. Introducing the special guest he had warm words for each, Joe Crowley Chairman of the West Cork board, Kevin O’Donovan, Coaching Officer of the County Board and the aforementioned Alan Quirke. He had a special word of congratulations for Kilbrittain’s own Jamie Wall who was in attendance along with the Fitzgibbon Cup.
Joe Crowley congratulated the Junior Footballers on a fantastic county victory. He congratulated the minor A hurlers also and reflected on the great hurlers produced by Kilbrittain especially those who played with Carbery in 1993 and 1994 when the team was “Backboned by tremendous Kilbrittain hurlers, Denis Healy, the O’Connell brothers, Finbar Sheehy, the late Micheal Holland to name but a few, all outstanding hurlers.” He urged the present players to “not let Carbery down” for the coming year. He was loud in praise for Dermot Hayes who was a Carbery selector over the last few years. Also he thanked the board delegates especially Marion Twohig and Dermot Hayes. He thanked Micheal O’Mahony for refereeing for the board sometimes at short notice. He also congratulated Jamie Wall saying “it was a tremendous week for Jamie … could be looking at a future Cork Senior Hurling manager from Kilbrittain “. He wished the club well with the continued development and expressed his certainty that Kilbrittain will “never be found wanting”. He finished by wishing the club many more years of success.
Kevin O’Donovan congratulated both teams particularly the minors. He said he was familiar with many of them from Carbery panels and coaching sessions and know they “are an honest bunch that you know will be still playing with the club in ten or fifteen years time”. He acknowledged it is a challenge for dual clubs to give time to both codes and said it was a credit to Kilbrittain in a hurling heartland to allow players play both codes. He said he followed Kilbrittain when he was growing up when Kilbrittain were senior, and were the standard bearers at the time, and he has no doubt the club will soon be back up due to the work at under-age with the likes of John Considine doing great work. He joined in the praise of Jamie Wall he said “ we will hear more about him in the coming years …. and people like him will make a lasting impression on the GAA.” Referring to the development he urged the broader club to support the people working on the ground, those who sell the tickets, deal with planning permissions etc. He praised Kilbrittain for having no problems with ‘gender quotas’ as “the sister’s are doing it for themselves here”. He said he knows both Marion and Sharon from board meeting at both adult and under-age level and knows they are continually working. He finished by urging participation. “There is a major challenge with rural isolation and urban over population, the only solution is participation, it is important to bring on every player whether they are the top player or number 22 on the panel. Survival depends on that.” He urged the minors to continue and just look at the likes of Owen Sexton and Noel Griffen for their participation.
Alan Quirke was honoured to be asked to present the medals to both teams. He said he first saw Kilbrittain play hurling in a county quarter final in Innishannon in 1985. He admired the aforementioned O’Connell brothers, Micheal Holland and others. He congratulated both teams and especially the minors as he said any year you win a championship and league it shows consistency. He acknowledged it is difficult to win a county and it is important to celebrate them. He congratulation Jamie Wall and entertained the crowd with a story about his long time friend Owen Sexton where a planned sabotage of a DIY project at Owen’s house was thwarted by Owen himself before it could be carried out! He said it is the memories like this and friends you make during your GAA career that makes it worthwhile. He also urged the minor team to stay with it as long as they can to keep the club going.
Jamie Wall in accepting a presentation from Alan Quirke, urged participation at the highest level possible and urged the minors to play with their colleges if they get the opportunity. He said while this night was not about him, and all about the junior team and minor team, he was grateful for all the kind words said about him.
Alan Quirke then presented the medals to both teams and with the formalities over, the crowd were entertained by ‘The Music Makers’ into the early hours of Sunday morning.
The occasion was treated to the first official viewing of a club promotional video showing off local landmarks such as Kilbrittain Castle, Harbour View platform, Rathclarin Church and Crois na leanbh among others. It includes footage of the ‘La na gClub’ training day and audio from previous landmark games such as the county intermediate final from 1995.
