Junior B football county c'ship quarter-final
Kilbrittain v Ballinacurra.
Kilbrittain and Ballinacurra met in the quarter-final of the Junior B county championship in sunny Carrigaline on Saturday evening last. Any thoughts that Kilbrittain had at half time as they led 2-8 to 0-3, that their opponents would lie down in the second half, were dismissed by a resurgent Ballinacurra side, as the men from the east went toe to toe with the Carbery side for the remainder of the game. They badly needed a goal but the Kilbrittain defence were well marshalled by Owen Sexton and with Seamus O’Brien on form, they failed to raise a much needed green flag!
Kilbrittain started the game at a high tempo and were 1-2 to the good within five minutes. Pat O’Mahony opened the scoring with a pointed free quickly followed with his second, from play within two minutes. The Ballinacurra defence were caught napping moments later when Josh O’Donovan got onto the end of a good pass by Tomas Harrington to finish to the net on the four minute mark. It was all Kilbrittain in those early stages forcing Ballinacurra to play Tomas O’Leary as an extra defender. Despite that however, Chris Hickey, Patrick O’Mahony and Harrington all added to the scoresheet and O’Mahony hit the side-netting with a bullet before Ballinacurra opened their account with a pointed free from the boot of Thomas Houlihan in the 13th minute. Houlihan got his sides second and James Nagle added the third in between two excellent scores from Pat O’Mahony who was playing superb football as we entered the last ten minutes of the half. O’Mahony kicked a beauty with four minutes on the clock, and in the next Kilbrittain attack, they were awarded a penalty. Josh O’Donovan made no mistake to put Kilbrittain 2-8 to 0-3 going in at the break.
Ballinacurra rang the changes at half time. Jake Hegarty and Dave O’Donoghue were introduced and they got off the mark straight from the throw in with a fine point from James Nagle. Tomas Harrington responded immediately for Kilbrittain at the other side and almost from the kick out, Josh O’Donovan gathering a good pass from Dave Desmond (Introduced at halftime), fired home his and Kilbrittain’s third goal from close range. Ballinacurra had Tomas O’Leary dismissed with a black card following a foul on Nick O’Donovan and Noel Griffen put over the resulting free in the fifth minute of the half. Pat O’Mahony got on the end of another good ball from Desmond to put over one of the scores of the game three minutes later. Ballinacurra replied with a point from a Stephen O’Brien free and added another from Nagle. The play was up and down the field at this stage with both sides serving up a very entertaining game of football. O’Mahony added a point for Kilbrittain followed by a pointed free from O’Brien for Ballinacurra. Nick O’Donovan and Matthew Thompson swapped points and Harrington added his third for Kilbrittain. Ballinacurra were finishing strong, but as mentioned earlier, they couldn’t break down the Kilbrittain defence where Sexton, Sean McCarthy and Chris Hickey excelled. Padraic Nagle, Jake Hegarty and James Nagle all got in for points as the clock ticked down into the last five minutes. O’Mahony kept the distance between the teams with his eight point of the day followed by a fine point from Hegarty. In the dying moments of the game Nick O’Donovan kicked a lovely point that was to be the last score of the game. Kilbrittain were comfortable winners in the end but credit is due to Ballinacurra for giving it everything during the second half. Final score Kilbrittain 3-16 Ballinacurra 0-12.
Main Man: Pat O’Mahony was impeccable, scoring some great points under pressure and was unlucky not to have a goal in the first half. His eight points, seven from play, were out of the top drawer. Josh O’Donovan was a close second following a ‘hat-trick’ of goals and a fine game overall.
Kilbrittain: Seamus O’Brien, Sean Crowley, Owen Sexton, Sean McCarthy, Nick O’Donovan 0-2, Chris Hickey 0-1, Cal McCarthy, Ross Cashman, Maurice Sexton, Patrick O’Mahony 0-1, Tomas Harrington 0-3, Damien Desmond, Josh O’Donovan 3-0, Noel Griffen 0-1, (0-1 frees), Pat O’Mahony 0-8 (0-1 free).

Kilbrittain 3-10 Shanballymore 0-2
Kilbrittain Junior B footballers advance to the quarter final of the county championship with a one-sided victory in Ballygarvan on Saturday evening. It was looking like a closer game at half time with Kilbrittain enjoying a slender four point advantage 1-3 to 0-2 at the break. A Josh O’Donovan goal six minutes into the second half and the sending off of Shanballymore’s Sean Lynch following a late tackle on O’Donovan a minute later took the game beyond Shanballymore, who now had a mountain to climb, a mountain they failed to conquer!
Kilbrittain’s Patrick O’Mahony opened the scoring with a low dipping shot that went over off the crossbar in the fourth minute. Dylan O’Callaghan responded a minute later and Shanballymore took the lead for the only time in the game in the 9th minute with a fine point from Kenneth Barry who would prove to be one of their better players. A Noel Griffen free levelled matters on the quarter hour and it looked like we would have an exciting close game to look forward to. How wrong we were, as Kilbrittain began to dominate all sectors and would have had the game over at half time only for two goal chances that went a begging from Pat O’Mahony and Josh O’Donovan. A Griffen free steadied the ship with ten minutes to the break and it was Griffen who got on the end of a high delivery from Patrick O’Mahony to guide the ball over the head of Naill Barry for the games first goal with seven minutes left in the half. Pat O’Mahony went close again hitting the side net with a powerful shot as the half time whistle approached.
It was all Kilbrittain in the second half. Shanballymore dropped a man back which signalled their intention to defend, and it was Griffen who signalled Kilbrittains intent with a pointed free in the first minute. Griffen added another on five minutes before O’Donovan’s goal in the 6th. Pat O’Mahony sent a fine delivery across the face of the goal for O’Donovan to volley the ball to the net soccer stlye. Griffen pointed a free following the foul on O’Donovan to put Kilbrittain ahead 2-6 to 0-2 with Shanballymore facing the rest of the game with fourteen men. A couple of Kenneth Barry chances went a begging as Kilbrittain took complete control for the next fifteen minutes, Josh O’Donovan converted a penalty and added a point by the quarter hour. Impressive Pat O’Mahony kicked a fine point following good work by O’Donovan and Tomas Harrington added another with seven minutes left. Ross Cashman, Maurice Sexton and Patrick O’Mahony finished strong for Kilbrittain who closed out the game despite a renewed Shanballymore rally in the closing stages when Shaun Cronin, Alan Sheedy and Jerome Fitzgerald all went close to scoring. Griffen finished the scoring in the 28th minute with a great point from an acute angle to send Kilbrittain safely into the quarter final where they will meet Ballinacurra in two weeks time. Kilbrittain finished the game with fourteen players as Patrick O’Mahony had to go off following a late dangerous tackle.

Junior B county championship rd 1
Kilbrittain v Glenlara.
Kilbrittain Junior ‘B’ footballers made a winning start to the championship with a fine win over Glenlara at Kilmicheal on Saturday afternoon. Despite the incessant rain the Kilmicheal pitch was perfect and this added to the flowing football on show. Kilbrittain opened the scoring in the first minute following a pointed free from Pat O’Mahony. Maurice Sexton added a second two minutes later. Kilbrittain showed early dominance with Sean Crowley very strong in defence and Declan Harrington causing all sorts of problems, but failed to translate that to the scoreboard as it was another fifteen minutes before Noel Griffen pointed a free from close range. Glenlara had a couple of chances with Jack McCauliffe and Conan Walsh coming close but struggled to get within scoring distance. Kilbrittain’s Patrick O’Mahony kicked a fine point on twenty minutes and Noel Griffen quickly followed with two points, one from a free to put Kilbrittain six points to no score to the good. Chris Hickey and Harrington were showing strong at this stage but then with six minutes to halftime, Glenlara got in for a goal following a quickly taken free that found Matty Fitzpatrick all alone with just Seamus O’Brien to beat and he made no mistake. This sparked a mini revival as Glenlara with McCauliffe making inroads had a point minutes later and another from a Fitzpatrick free in the second minute of injury time to close the gap. Noel Griffen pointed a free in reply but there was still time for Glenlara’s McCauliffe to kick a free to leave the halftime score Kilbrittain 0-7 Glenlara 1-3.
Kilbrittain turned with the elements and as the rain increased, they set out their intentions with points from Griffen a free and Pat O’Mahony, two from play within the first six minutes. As in the first half, Glenlara were struggling to cope with the Kilbrittain pressure and in the tenth minute, Pat O’Mahony bore down on goal and with the goal at his mercy, was fouled, but the ball fell to Declan Harrington who buried it to the net. This effectively put the game beyond Glenlara as Kilbrittain had control in all areas. Griffen pointed frees in the fourteenth and eighteenth minutes to make it Kilbrittain 1-12 Glenlara 1-3 and that is how it finished as Kilbrittain emptied their bench during the final ten minutes and defended well as Glenlara pushed for scores with McCauliffe and Fitzpatrick going close with a couple of chances. Kilbrittain now await the third round draw while Glenlara face a second round back door. Final score Kilbrittain 1-12 Glenlara 1-3.
Teams: Seamus O’Brien, Sean Crowley, Owen Sexton, John Kearney, Chris Hickey, Nick O’Donovan, Cian O’Leary, Ross Cashman, Conor O’Donovan, Patrick O’Mahony 0-1, Tom Harrington, Maurice Sexton 0-1, Declan Harrington 1-0, Noel Griffen, 0-7,(0-6 frees), Pat O’Mahony 0-3, (0-1 free). Subs used Sean McCarthy, Ryan Lombard, Ivan Burke, James Hurley, Dylan Twohig, Ger Whelton.
