Finally the Minor hurling County final was fixed and the Minor hurlers met Keale Gaels in the minor B1 county final last Saturday afternoon in Ovens.
Both sides were even enough in the early stages until the amalgamated side started to pull away after a goal in the eight minute and a couple of points to make it 1-5 to 0-3 before a Mark Hickey goal kept Kilbrittain in touch at halftime, Kilbrittain 1-4 Keale Gaels 1-8.
Kilbrittain were reduced to fourteen men halfway through the second half when Mark Hickey received a second yellow card. Kilbrittain played their best hurling then though, but found it difficult to find scores. A physically stronger Keale Gaels finished strongly and ran out eight point winners in the end, 1-16 to 1-8.
Kilbrittain can be proud of their performances all year to reach a county final for the first time in twenty five years at this level. While only five will be over age next year, the experience should stand to the remaining players.
The Under-Age section AGM was held recently and was well attended.
Officers for the coming season were elected as follows:
Chair Lawrence Sexton, Vice Chair Tadgh O'Mahony,
Secretary Fionnuala O'Sullivan, Assistant Secretary Una McCarthy,
Treasurer Catherine Harrington, Assistant Treasurer Turlough Daly,
PRO Mary Brennan, Child Protection Officer Judy Sexton & Jan O'Donovan
We wish all the very best for the year ahead.

The under 12 footballers brought their season to an end with championship action on Sunday last, away to Naomh Aban, Ballyvourney. They got off to a good start and there was not much in it at half time. However, from the start of the second half, Ballyvourney upped the level and Kilbrittain could not match it. Kilbrittain never gave up though and they fought to the end with goalkeeper Adam Griffen pulled off a few saves he had no right to make. Kilbrittain played some great football this season and should be proud of their efforts.
The under 10's finished off the football season with a blitz in Clonakilty on Saturday morning last. With over twenty players togged out, two teams took on Castlehaven, Clonakilty and Drimoleague in group 1 and Castlehaven, Drimoleague and Barryroe in group 2. Report:
Minor B1 Hurling County semi-final
Kilbrittain 3-9 Buttevant 2-10
Three first half goals paved the way for Kilbrittain to win this Rebel Og Minor B1 hurling county semi-final in a damp drizzly Ballincollig on Saturday afternoon last. Conor Hogan, Cj O’Connell and Darragh Considine were the providers in the fifth, tenth and eleventh minutes. The goals put Kilbrittain 3-2 to 0-1 to the good before Buttevant marksman Gavin Carey’s free went all the way to the net in the thirteenth minute.
Kilbrittain were quick out of the traps with Mark Hickey pointing a free in the first minute. He added a second free two minutes later before the three Kilbrittain goals. Seamus O’Sullivan provided the pass to the impressive Conor Hogan to rattle the net in the fifth minute. Kilbrittain looked well in control in the early stages, while Gavin Carey emerged the main provider of scores with his first from a free in the seventh minute. A Mark Hickey free dropped short and into the path of CJ O’Connell who whipped a ground stroke to the net for Kilbrittain’s second major. Buttevant had hardly time to register that goal when Daragh Considine sent in a long ball that Niall O’Riordan caught, but was judged to be behind the goal line when he did.
Buttevant then hit the next four scores. Carey’s goal was quickly followed by a free from the same player and two more points from dead balls kept Buttevant in touch. Seamus O’Sulllivan stretched Kilbrittains lead four minutes from halftime with a lovely point before two pointed frees from Hickey made it Kilbrittain 3-5 Buttevant 1-4 at the break.
Kilbrittain started brightly again for the second half but their shooting was off with a number of chances sent wide in the opening minutes of the second half. Buttevant opened the second half scoring with a free from Carey. Mark Hickey and Colm Sheehan then settled Kilbrittains nerves with two points in quick succession before a strong run from impressive Shane O’Callaghan set up a fine point for Micheal O’Neill, Buttevants first score from play. Carey hit a long free over to make it 3-7 to 1-7 with fifteen minutes left. Hickey made it a seven point game from a ’65 in a frenetic few minutes which saw Buttevant reply with two points from the free taking of Carey. Hickey hit another point from play that was to be Kilbrittains final score with ten minutes left. Kilbrittain’s concentration slipped somewhat in the final minutes as Buttevant searched for scores. A free from Carey reduced it to five points with four minutes left.
With the pressure from Buttevant causing problems in the Kilbrittain defence where Donagh Galvin, Jack O’Donovan and Aaron Holland all impressed, substitute David Keane rattled the Kilbrittain net in injury time to reduce Kilbrittains lead to two points. Kilbrittain held out however to reach the county final which will be held on the weekend of 22nd /23rd September.
Scorers: Kilbrittain: Mark Hickey 0-7 (0-4 frees, 0-1’65), Conor Hogan, CJ O’Connell, Darragh Considine 1-0 each, Seamus O’Sullivan, Colm Sheehan 0-1 each.

On Sunday evening the Minor hurlers met Kinsale in a replay of the Rebel Og West B1 final. Level at half time 1-5 each, a powerful performance by Mark Hickey with 0-10 to his name secured a deserved win for Kilbrittain. The cup was presented to captain Aaron Holland who repeats history as his father Micheal captained Kilbrittain to west Cork Minor hurling honours back in 1980. Kilbrittain now meet Buttevant in the county rounds on Saturday at 3pm in Ballincollig.
Rebel Og West Minor B1 hurling final replay
Kilbrittain 1-16 Kinsale 1-10
Following the excitement of the drawn game, this replayed Rebel Og West Minor B1 hurling final never reached the heights of the first encounter while still providing an entertaining game in Timoleague on Sunday evening last. The dominant names from the first game were equally impressive for both sides this time around, with Mark Hickey hitting 1-10 for the winners while John O’Brien hit 0-8 for Kinsale.
Kinsale were without James Rooney from the drawn game but it was his replacement at full forward Daniel Graham who gave Kinsale the best of starts with a goal from a fine ground stroke within a minute of the throw-in. There was hardly time to catch breath when Hickey had the sliothar in the net at the other end, but was judged to have over carried in the build-up and the goal was disallowed. Kilbrittain recovered from that set-back with a point from impressive Darragh Considine and when Conor Hogan was upended in the danger area, Hickey buried the resultant penalty to put Kilbrittain in front for the first time in the game with ten minutes played. Darragh Crowley was beginning to shine at midfield for Kinsale and John O’Brien hit his first two points both from frees in quick succession. Hard working CJ O’Connell, and Sean Sexton both hit fine points to leave Kilbrittain one ahead by the quarter hour. A pointed free from O’Brien and a beauty from Darragh Crowley edged Kinsale back in front before O’Connell rounded his marker and sent over a fine point with less than ten minutes to the break. Eoghan Galvin had to be alert to put a goal-bound shot out for a fruitless ’65, before a monster long range free from Kilbrittain Captain Aaron Holland re-gained the lead for Kilbrittain entering the final minutes of the half. Harry Sheehan and Darragh Crowley were working very hard for Kinsale at this stage and Sheehan won a free which O’Brien converted to send the teams in at the break 1-5 each.
The second half will be remembered for the display given by Kilbrittain midfielder Mark Hickey. Ten second half points was the main reason the title went to Kilbrittain as he put in a masterful display of shooting from both dead ball and from play. Three Kilbrittain points, two from Hickey, both frees and a brilliant effort by equally impressive Conor Ustianowski, put Kilbrittain in the driving seat and a lead they would not surrender. Holland was showing his influence from the back while Sean Sexton worked his socks off around the middle. On the other side Harry Sheehan Conor McCarthy and O’Brien were working hard for Kinsale. A Crowley point narrowed the gap, but some poor finishing added to sound goalkeeping from Eoghan Galvin, kept Kinsale at bay. A Hickey free stretched the lead to three again before a pointed ’65 from O’Brien made it 1-9 to 1-7 with fifteen minutes left. Conor Hogan was causing problems now for the Kinsale defence and a point from a Hickey free signalled a short purple patch for the ‘Black & Amber’. Hickey landed a long range free and then won the puck out and landed a monster score from near the sideline to the loudest cheer of the evening. A demoralising blow to Kinsale, but they never gave up and a free from O’Brien, who had been moved into the full forward line at this stage, kept them in touch. O’Brien and Hickey swapped two points each to make it 1-14 to1-10 with time entering the final ten minutes. Eoghan Galvin was called upon again twice in quick succession as the clock counted down with a number of shots stopped and scrambled from danger, with Holland clearing off the line as Kinsale desperately looked for the goal that would rescue their game. It never came though as Kilbrittain finished strong and two Hickey points within seconds of each other made it a six point game. Kinsale did have one last throw of the dice but Galvin and the packed Kilbrittain defence stood firm and it finished Kilbrittain 1-16 Kinsale 1-10. Fergal Keohane of Rebel Og West presented the cup to a delighted Aaron Holland amid scenes of celebration. Kilbrittain now go on to meet Buttevant in the county round this coming weekend.

On Sunday evening last the Minor hurlers met Kinsale in the Rebel Og B1 final at a foggy Barryroe. Kinsale lead at halftime thanks to two first half goals 2-7 to 1-8. Mark Hickey hit Kilbrittains second goal, from a penalty late in the second half to level the game. Two points put Kilbrittain ahead but in injury time a Kinsale free took the game to a reply on a final score of 2-13 each.
Massive well done to our U12's who travelled to Semple Stadium in Thurles last Wednesday for a hurling blitz. They took to the field against teams from Lixnaw, Ballyhea and Newport, and played very well. They enjoyed the whole experience, including a stop in McDonald's on the way home for a well earned treat. They arrived back exhausted...A big thanks to the trainers who took tome off work to take the lads on this great day out. Thanks to all the parents and supporters who travelled too.
Congratulations also to Conor Ustianowski and the Cork Mid/West U15 football team, who won the National u15 Tournament last Saturday.
Also on Saturday, the U10s were in football league action, togging out against Valley Rovers. Twenty players took part facilitating a u9 side and a u10 side. Both teams were very competitive and played some great football.
The u9s really cut loose playing some really great passing football and are developing a great ability to take a score before getting into trouble!
The u10 lads faced a tougher test but played with great determination, created chances and took some great scores.

Rebel Og West Minor B1 hurling final
Kilbrittain 2-13 Kinsale 2-13
This Rebel Og West Minor B1 hurling final served up a thriller in a very foggy Barryroe on Sunday evening last. Kilbrittain were first out of the blocks, ace marksman Mark Hickey converting his first free in the first minute of the game. Kieran Murphy quickly added Kilbrittain’s second and the impressive CJ O’Connell hit a beauty before Hickey hit his second and Kilbrittain’s fourth point within six minutes. Despite Kilbrittain’s early dominance Jack Etty and Andrew O’Connell were doing their best to kick start Kinsale and in the seventh minute a Daniel Graham pass on to the on rushing Brian O’Neill, caught the Kilbrittain defence napping with O’Neill blasting to the net for Kinsale’s first score somewhat against the run of play. Hickey responded with a point from a free. John O’Brien hit Kinsale’s first point from a free and this score seemed to settle Kinsale after a nervous start and with O’Brien stating to cause Kilbrittain problems, Kinsale thundered into the game with their second goal when Donnagh Griffen ran straight at the Kilbrittain goal and planted an unstoppable shot past the able Kilbrittain net minder Eoin Galvin on the quarter hour mark.
An O’Connell point made it a one point game before O’Brien stretched Kinsale’s lead with two points, one from a free in quick succession. Aaron Holland, Gavin Hodge & Darragh Considine were working hard for Kilbrittain at the back while the hardworking O’Connell was causing problems for the Kinsale rearguard. It was a block on the Kinsale goalie Cian O’Sullivan in the22nd minute by O’Connell that let the ball land in the path of Hickey who planted the sliothar in the far left corner of the net for a cracking goal to bring Kilbrittain back into the game. O’Brien followed with a pointed free a minute later before Darragh Crowley hit a peach of a point as the clock approached halftime. O’Sullivan was called on again seconds later as the dangerous O’Connell raced on goal and a bullet of a shot was superbly saved at point blank range and deflected over the bar for Kilbrittains 7th point. Two frees were converted from O’Brien as the half entered injury time. Kieran Murphy hit a fine point to bring the half to a close with Kinsale in a two point lead 2-7 to 1-8.
The increasing foggy conditions was making the ball difficult to see and it showed with both sides hitting poor wides during the second half. Andrew O’Connell made it a three point lead straight from the throw in, Hickey responded with a pointed free. Kinsale then stretched ahead. Kealin O’Rourke and Jack Etty were particularly impressive in the early stages of the half and three unanswered points from O’Brien, a free and two from an improving James Rooney made it 2-11 to 1-9 by the 40th minute. Sean Sexton, Holland, and Colm Sheehan were fighting hard for the west cork side and while O’Brien missed a couple of close in frees for Kinsale with visibility fading, Hickey was sticking them over at the other side. Two points closed the gap by the three quarter stage before a fine run from impressive substitute Conor Hogan, resulted in a foul on Hogan within the danger zone. Hickey buried the resultant penalty and suddenly it was all square with little over twelve minutes left. Rooney and O’Brien tried hard to pull Kinsale away but with chances at a premium and some narrow wides from both sides, full time was approaching in a whelter of excitement. O’Brien pointed to edge the town side in front. A long range Hickey point levelled matters with three minutes left and Hickeys seventh free put Kilbrittain ahead by the narrowest with time up. Murphy and Holland had late chances to win it for Kilbrittain but in near zero visibility it was O’Brien who gave Kinsale another bite of the cherry with a pointed free in the second minute of injury time.
It finished 2-13 a piece after a hugely entertaining contest in poor conditions.

The annual under-age Cul camp was very well supported last week. Held over four days, the weather was good adding to the success of the event. Cork Senior hurlers Damien Cahalane and Luke Meade were the surprise guests on day three and four and both were generous with their time and coaching. The camp was also supported by visiting coaches Aisling Moloney, Caroline Sugrue, Christine O'Neill, Aine Crowley and Shane O'Donovan and many local coaches who were well received by all the kids taking part. The under-age committee would like to thank the Community Association for giving free reign on the pitches. Thanks to all the trainers and volunteers who were exceptional. Thanks to Noel Griffin for putting so much ground work in this year's Camp, Chairman Lawrence Sexton for co-ordinating the camp this year and to Mary Egan, Mary Brennan and Una McCarthy for their efforts every day. Thanks to Irene Cronin and Eamonn Egan for their talks to the groups. Overall a very enjoyable few days was had by all who took part and were involved.
