In 1926 shortly after the setting up of the South West Board, the divisional secretary through a clerical error on the part of the club, received two applications from Kilbrittain in conjunction with the Junior hurling championship. Kilbrittain were urged to let both applications stand and enter a Junior football team along with the Junior hurling team. The club accepted the request and in 1926/27 caused one of the biggest upsets at the time by winning the South West Cork football championship.
In April 1927 Kilbrittain beat Macroom in the county semi-final 0-3 to 0-1 and then met Geraldines in the county final which ended in a draw 2-1 each. The replay ended in a draw and the second replay saw Geraldines win by four points 2-3 to 1-2. In 1993 Kilbrittain Intermediate hurlers reached the county final against Youghal. The footballers made their way through the Junior A championship, having won the Junior B county in 1992, and beating O'Donovan Rossa in the semi-final 3-7 to 2-9 reached the final against Dohenys. Due to the Intermediate hurlers march to the county, Dohenys were nominated for the Junior A football county which they ended up winning. Kilbrittain met Dohenys in the delayed west cork final on December 5th where they were beaten 1-10 to 1-6. Kilbrittain have won the Junior B west cork football championship in 1970, Kilbrittain 2-6 St James 2-2 1992, Kilbrittain 1-3 D O'mathunas 0-5 2009 west cork qualifier final (county competition), Kilbrittain 0-8 Kilmeen 0-4 2016 Kilbrittain 4-14 Bantry 0-7 And were runner up in 1932 Kilbrittain 0-2 Glengarriff 4-2 and 1969 Kilbrittain 1-6 Castlehaven 2-12. All roads lead to Bandon on Saturday evening next where the Kilbrittain Intermediate hurlers will meet Ballincollig in the quarter-final of this years championship after both teams got a bye to this stage at the 4th round draws. throw in is at 7pm
Kilbrittain met Ballincollig a few short years ago when they won by the minimum after extra time. Kilbrittain enter the game following the footballers recent performances to reach the Junior A west cork final for the first time in 24 years and can draw on the feel good factor of this achievement. We wish all involved the very best of luck, At aghaigh le Chelie Kilbrittain have earned a spot in this years Junior A football Final after a dramatic one point victory over St Marys on Sunday evening last in Timoleague. Kilbrittain were 1-3 to no score down after the first 15 minutes but then found their range with 8 unanswered points to take the lead. St Marys added a point to make it 0-8 to 1-4 at half time. Kilbrittain put over 2 points on the re-start but then left St Marys back into it with a goal in the 8th minute. A penalty brilliantly saved by Seamus O'Brien was a huge phsycological boost to Kilbrittain but that didn't capitalize and St Marys hit four points without reply before a Noel Griffen free steadied Kilbrittains ship. St Marys added a free and then missed one as Griffen hit over another free with time up. St Marys hit their final score in the 2nd minute of injury time to lead by 5 before Josh O'Donovan got through for a 'Consolation' goal in the 3rd minute of injury time. Within a minute, Declan Harrington was fouled and the resultant free was lobbed into the square and broke to the hands of substitute Owen Sexton and he found the net with the last kick of the game mush to the delight of the Kilbrittain sideline and support. Final score Kilbrittain 2-12 St Marys 2-11. Kilbrittain now await the winners of Kilmacabea and St Oliver Plunkets which will be played next Saturday.
