Minor A hurling County first round/semi-final v Castlelyons
Kilbrittain minor A hurlers met Castleyons in the county semi final in a windy Ballygarvan on Saturday afternoon. Kilbrittain started brightly against the wind with Philip Wall opening the scoring in the second minute. Ciaran Byrne added a second two minutes later. Impressive Keith o’Leary replied for Castlelyons before Wall and Bertie Butler added two points in quick succession to make it 0-4 to 0-1. Barry Murphy added a second for the east cork side in the eight minute. A period of stalemate followed during which a stoppage of over three minutes was had for an injury to Castlelyons goalkeeper John Paul Murphy. He was to continue however. Two Bertie Butler frees stretched Kilbrittains lead and a Niall O’Leary response was cancelled out by Morgan Madden on the twenthieth minute. Keith O’Leary with a fine score from play and the other a free kept Castlelyons ticking over. Bertie Butler added his 4th before A Castlelyons purple patch resulted in four points in as many minutes from Barry Murphy, Ian O’Riordan and Kieth O’Leary (2) one a beautiful sideline cut over the bar put them in the lead for the first time with halftime approaching . Tomas Sheehan levelled matters just before the break with a fine point to leave the sides level at halftime 0-9 each.
Ryan Lombard, Kilbrittain and Cork minor captain Niall O’Leary swapped points at the start of the second half. A Butler free put Kilbrittain back in front in the fifth minute. Castlelyons were putting fierce pressure on the Kilbrittain backline at this stage and despite the best efforts of Eoghan Byrne, Dylan Towhig and Shane Sweetnam, they got the games first goal in the 7th minute when Niall O’Leary hit the net with a fine strike. Points from Lombard and a ’65 from Sam Shorten brought the teams level again by the quarter hour, but Castlelyons were beginning to get on top throughout the field and a second goal in the 18th by Mark Spillane followed by points from Barry Murphy (2) one a free, and Niall O’Leary meant Kilbrittain had it all to do in the closing stages. A pointed ’65 from Sam Shorten and a good point from Tomas Sheehan deep in injury time was as good as it would get for hardworking Kilbrittain though as Castlelyons held out for the victory over a gallant Kilbrittain side who were best served by the aforementioned Twohig, Sweetnam, Byrne, Wall, Sheehan and Butler. Minor A hurling west cork final C'ship v Ahane Gaels

On Saturday evening the Minor A hurlers met reigning champions Ahan Gaels in the rebel Og west final played in a very windy Newcestown. Kilbrittain played with the wind in the first half an made every use of it leading at half time 1-11 to 0-4. Bertie Butler ( who would finish with 1-9) buried a penalty awarded shortly before half time to put daylight between the sides. Ahan tried hard during the second half but the Kilbrittain defence were outstanding under a lot of pressure. When Kilbrittain did break up the field into the wind, they made it all count with Bertie Butler unerring from four second half frees to keep the distance between the sides. Second half substitute Darragh Moore put the icing on the cake with a great personal score with time almost up to help Kilbrittain win a deserved victory 1-16 to 0-10. Minor A hurling C'ship v Clonakilty
Kilbrittain 2-16 Clonakilty 1-7
Kilbrittain minor hurlers reached the final of the rebel og west ‘A’ championship courtesy of a fine win over Clonakilty at sun kissed Timoleague on Thursday night last. This game had been held up due to Clonakitys involvement with the Cork Minor footballers. Mark White had played in goal for Cork in their defeat to Donegal the previous Saturday. However White would be a huge loss to Clonakilty as he suffered a concussion early in that game against Donegal and could not partake in this game for his club. Oisin Dewey opened the scoring in the first minute with a point. Clonakilty’s Sean O’Donoghue sent over a free in the fifth minute but that was as close as Clonakilty got as two minutes later a good pass from Philip Wall found Bertie Butler with a little space and he billowed the net from close range. Kilbrittain never looked back. Their passing was accurate, and a good pass from Sam Shorten but Ciaran Byrne in for a fine point on nine minutes. Tomas Sheehan added another before a good point from Wall and two from Bertie Butler made it Kilbrittain 1-6 Clonakilty 0-1 by the twentieth minute mark. Clon were unlucky too during this time however as a low free from O’Donoghue was saved and cleared, quickly followed by another free that hit the post and out wide. O’Donoghue did find the range with eight minutes on the clock. Tomas Sheehan added his second for Kilbrittain a minute later. The Kilbrittain forwards were causing plenty headaches for Clonakilty at this stage with clever off the ball running and quick and accurate passing. O’Donoghue kept Clon in the game with two pointed frees before halftime. But Kilbrittain finished the scoring through Philip Wall with a fine point in the last minute of the half. It read Kilbrittain 1-8 Clonakilty 0-4 at the break.
Clonakilty came out all guns blazing and were almost in for a goal in the opening seconds but for a fine full length diving save from Kilbrittain goalkeeper Ian Hodge. The resulting ’65 tailed off wide but Clon kept up the pressure and Sean O’Donoghue added his and Clon’s fifth point from a free a minute later. Kilbrittain when they settled took control once again. A Philip Wall effort hit the post before a close in free from Bertie Butler settled them down in the eight minute. A great pass from Sam Shorten set up Wall for a nice point which was quickly followed by a great point from the stick of Ciaran Byrne. The Clonakilty goalie Brian White was called on for a long range free which he duly put over the bar in the thirteenth minute. A Bertie Butler free made it 1-12 to 0-6 mid way through the half. Darragh Moore, with practically his first touch having been introduced as a sub, scored a fine point from the roadside sideline, quickly followed by a brace of points from Butler to extend Kilbrittain lead and control of the game. Hardworking Sean O’Donoghue added a free for Clon before Philip Wall pounced for Kilbrittains second goal with a fine ground stroke with seven minutes left on the clock. As the game wound down to its inevitable conclusion, Clon kept trying with Cathal O’Regan, Shane Collins, Tomas Palmer and Padraig Ryan working hard and O’Donoghue hit the side netting following a strong run with two minutes to go. His persistence paid off as in the next passage of play he got inside the Kilbrittain defenc e to find the net with time almost up. Kilbrittain had the last say with a second point from Darragh Moore just before the final whistle. It finished Kilbrittain 2-16 Clonakilty 1-7. Kilbrittain now meet Ahane Gaels in the final, Ahane Gaels having beaten Ibane Gaels the previous night.

Junior B hurling C'ship v Bantry.
Kilbrittain v Bantry in Dunmanway Friday 8th July
Kilbrittain 1-2 Bantry 4-11
Bantry had it easy in the end of this west cork first round Junior B hurling championship tie in a wet Dunmanway on Friday night. They lead 1-6 to 1-1 at half time and three second half goals put paid to any Kilbrittain fight back, winning comfortably in the end. The standard didn’t reach any great heights during the first half with Kilbrittain’s third string just doing enough to keep Bantry at bay. Kilbrittain opened the scoring with a point from a Patrick O’Mahony free within thirty seconds. Another placed ball missed the target three minutes later as Kilbrittain made the opening charges. Bantry began to settle though with Seanie O’Leary and John Lavin starting to take command at midfield and Shane McCarthy causing headaches for the Kilbrittain defence. Lavin opened Bantry’s account with a free on ten minutes which was quickly followed by a fine point from Shane O’Neill. Arthur Coakley made it three on the quarter hour but in the next movement Kilbrittain re-took the lead as a long delivery by impressive James Hurley fell kindly to Sean Coughlan at the edge of the square, Coughlan picked his spot and hit the back of the net with a fine ground strike. Bantry responded with a point from Garry Hurley and when the Kilbrittain defence failed to clear a dangerous ball, the aforementioned Shane McCarthy was at hand to billow the Kilbrittain net. Both Cathal and Shane McCarthy added points before the break. James and Paudie Hurley were impressive for Kilbrittain during that first half, but the attack struggled to get to grips with the game. Garry Hurley increased Bantry’s lead in the first minute of the second half. Anthony O’Regan responded with a close in free a minute later and that was to be Kilbrittain’s last score. Bantry stepped up a gear with Connie O’Leary, Lavin, Hurley and Coakley very prominent. Hurley brought out a fine save from Lloyd McSweeney in the Kilbrittain net but minutes later a long effort from Shane O’Neill deceived the Kilbrittain Net minder and sneaked inside the post for a fortuitous goal. Kilbrittain couldn’t respond to this and while Davy O’Sullivan, James Hurley and David Hayes tried their best to keep Bantry back, with James Deasy and Gerry Coughlan working hard around the middle, the fitness of Bantry was beginning to show as the game wore on. Points from Coakley and O’Neill made it 2-10 to 1-2 and no way back for a tiring Kilbrittain. The failing light (due to the persistant rain) may have contributed to Bantry’s third goal as a long free from Shane O’Neill, all of sixty five yards, went all the way to the net again deceiving McSweeney in goal. Kilbrittain barely had any time to process this score when the ball fell to substitute Steven Coughlan at the edge of the square and he made no mistake for Bantry’s fourth goal. Done and dusted with three minutes on the clock, Cathal McCarthy added his first and Bantry’s eleventh with time almost up.
Shane McCarthy caused the Kilbrittain backline numerous problems chipping in with 1-1 over the hour.

Junior A hurling championship rd 1
Kilbrittain v Kibree in Ahiohill Friday 24-6-2016
Kilbree 2-27 Kilbrittain 1-10
Kilbree delivered a statement of intent with a comprehensive victory over Kilbrittains second string in Ahiohill on Friday evening last. Winning the toss and electing to play with the strong breeze they dictated the pace of the play from the throw in. Top scorer and captain Darragh Coakley opened the scoring from the first attack within the first minute. His midfield partner Ray Collins added a second almost from the puck out and it was evident from this early stage that the inexperienced Kilbrittain side would have their hands full. Coakley added a third point before Kilbrittain’s Sam Shorten opened his sides account with a pointed free. Kilbree responded with a point from Martin O’Donovan. A second Shorten free followed and a point from Kilbree’s Don McCarthy made it 0-5 to 0-2 in favour of the Rossmore side after six minutes. Kilbree then shifted into another gear and dominated the game from then to the half time whistle. Using the wind to good effect they added two points from Coakley, a free and Dylan Coffey before Damien O’Gorman received a fine pass from Martin O’Donovan that split the Kilbrittain defence, and O’Gorman billowed the sliothar to the net with an unstoppable shot. It was all Kilbree at this stage and despite some dogged defending by Kilbrittain half back line in particular, they found their scores with ease. Four points were added before a Dylan Coffey shot was well saved by Kilbrittain custodian Terry O’Regan in the 21st minute. Kilbrittain to their credit fought hard, Denis Ryan and Dylan Twohig working hard and Seamus O’Brien winning good ball at full forward, but the supply was limited. The points flowed with Coakley unerring from frees, Kevin O’Donovan running good lines in the inside forward line and O’Gorman proving a handful for the Kilbrittain backline. Ryan Lombard found the post with a minute to the short whistle with a fine point from distance for Kilbrittain but the final nail in the coffin came with practically the last puck of the half as the long puck out was gathered on the edge of the Kilbrittain square by O’Gorman who took on the defence and fired a second bullet to the net. Game effectively over at the break Kilbree 2-15 Kilbrittain 0-4.
Kilbrittain who had already lost two players to their Intermediate team, and five to leaving certificate and ‘J1’ travelling, fielded six minors from the start and minus the services of Alan Hayes, injured, gave as good as they got during the second half. A Shorten free after thirty seconds opened the second half scoring. Kilbree uncharacteristically began to show cracks more than doubling their first half wides tally (2), with five off target in the next ten minutes. Points from Don McCarthy and Martin O’Donovan stopped the rot and with Kevin O’Donovan taking over the free-taking, Kilbree began to regain their first half dominance. Kilbrittain continued to work hard and a point from Shorten was quickly followed by a fine goal from Seamus O’Brien as he pulled on a ball at the edge of the square in the 46th minute. The game petered out to its inevitable conclusion with both sides swapping points during the final minutes. Kevin O’Donovan three frees, Ray Collins and Don McCarthy adding to the tally. Shorten two, Darragh Moore and Conor O’Donovan adding points for Kilbrittain. Kilbree had done enough during the first half to progress to the next round and will be especially pleased that all eight mid-field/forward players got on the scoresheet. Kilbrittain must re-group and face St James in round 2 most likely going ahead on 9th July.
Kilbree: Denis Dullea, Davy O’Donovan, Danny Kelly, Kevin Keohane, John Clancy, Brain O’Donovan, Donal McSweeney, Darragh Coakley 0-10(0-8frees), Ray Collins 0-2, Dylan Coffey 0-1, Don McCarthy 0-4, Liam Daly 0-1, Martin O’Donovan 0-4, Damien O’Gorman 2-0, Kevin O’Donovan 0-5 (0-4 frees). Subs: Sean Deasy for Coakley, Tim O’Donovan for Clancy.
