Friday, January 11, 2013 Eoin Cadogan and Ciarán Sheehan are the most high-profile additions to the Cork senior football team for Sunday’s McGrath Cup quarter-final against Tipperary at Páirc Uí Rinn (2pm). Cadogan, who had been travelling for the past few months, has returned and is named at full-back. While there had been speculation that the Douglas man would commit to only playing football for the coming year, no decision has yet been made on the subject. The selection of Cadogan frees up Michael Shields to form an all-new half-back line along with Brian Shanahan and Noel O’Leary. Alan O’Connor, who started at full-forward in Sunday’s win over Cork IT, is picked in his more familiar midfield role while Sheehan is centre-forward. In the full-forward line, Barry O’Driscoll and Donncha O’Connor are both changes from the last game. CORK (McGrath Cup SF v Tipperary): K O’Halloran (Bishopstown); J McLoughlin (Kanturk), E Cadogan (Douglas), D Cahalane (Castlehaven); M Shields (St Finbarr’s), B Shanahan (Carbery Rangers), N O’Leary (Cill na Martra); A O’Connor (St Colum’s), A O’Sullivan (Castletownbere); J Fitzpatrick (Carbery Rangers), C Sheehan (Éire Óg), O Mulrooney (Douglas); B O’Driscoll (Nemo Rangers), D O’Connor (Ballydesmond), L Shorten (Béal Áthan Ghaorthaidh). Subs: D Lordan (Ballincollig), S Kiely (Macroom), C O’Driscoll (Ilen Rovers), P Kerrigan (Nemo Rangers), P O’Neill (Aghada), D O’Sullivan (Ballinascarthy), F Goold (Macroom). By Michael Moynihan
Tuesday, January 08, 2013 Dónal Óg Cusack is unlikely to captain the Cork senior hurlers in 2013, with a new skipper likely to be appointed in the next fortnight. Goalkeeper Cusack was selected by manager Jimmy Barry-Murphy at the start of last year’s campaign, but did not play after injuring his Achilles tendon in the league semi-final against Tipperary in April. With a return date for Cusack still to be confirmed, the Cork management team are set to pick a new captain prior to the first Waterford Crystal Cup game against UCC at the Mardyke on January 19. "We haven’t finalised a panel or decided anything with the captaincy," Cork selector Kieran Kingston said after Sunday’s 4-16 to 1-17 challenge win over Cork IT. "It’s still early in the year, we’re not playing a league game for another two months. Nothing has been discussed, but we would expect to be picking a captain for the year before the Waterford Crystal." http://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/cahalane-to-focus-on-football-218937.html
Cahalane to focus on football By Michael Moynihan Tuesday, January 08, 2013 Cork dual star Damien Cahalane is to concentrate on Gaelic football for the coming inter-county season, it has emerged. Cahalane lined out for the Rebel footballers on Sunday in their season-opening McGrath Cup game against Cork IT, and Cork hurling selector Kieran Kingston confirmed yesterday that Cahalane will not figure for the county’s hurlers this year. "Damien was in touch with Jimmy (Barry-Murphy, Cork manager) in the last couple of days to tell him he would be concentrating on Gaelic football for the season. He said he’d love to be able to play both but felt he’d be unable to give the necessary commitment to both codes. It’s a blow to us, there’s no other way to describe it. Damien made his championship debut for us last year and was certainly a big part of our plans looking at the year ahead. He’s a big man with physical presence, a smashing lad, and we’d have seen his progress as vital for us in the next twelve months. We’d have been willing to facilitate him in terms of training and so forth but he didn’t feel he’d be able to manage both sports. We wish him all the best, obviously, and we all hope he does very well with the footballers. The door would remain very much open for him if he reconsiders later in the year, we’d be delighted to have him back on board." Cahalane is the second promising youngster the Cork hurlers have lost in recent months: midfielder Darren Sweetnam, who impressed for the Rebels last season, signed a professional rugby contract with Munster last October and has been lost to the inter-county scene for the foreseeable future. There is also uncertainty over the future of current dual star Eoin Cadogan, who is due to return from travelling overseas in the next week. Cadogan has combined Gaelic football and hurling in recent seasons and is expected to inform the management of the senior hurling and football teams on Leeside of his plans for 2013 in coming days. Now that training has officially started and matches will be starting,(U21 played practice match last weekend.) players are reminded to pay their membership before they play. It is important to have membership paid so in the event of an injury, you will be covered under the GAA injury scheme. Player membership was fixed at €70 at the AGM in November. Players are asked to pay away to any officer.
Also it might be an idea for players to start getting used to wearing gumshields/mouthgaurds while playing football. Minors down are required to wear them this year and will not be allowed play without one. All players will be required to wear them from the first of January 2014, so start getting used to them during 2013! |
